Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie Crochet Pattern

The Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie is an extra thick and warm crochet bun/ponytail beanie! If you wear your hair up, but want to keep your head and ears warm, then this crochet beanie is perfect for you! This pattern includes 4 sizes and can easily be customized to be any size!

Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie crochet pattern by The Turtle Trunk

The Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie is based off the Easy Breezy Chunky Beanie! Made with bulky (5) weight yarn, it creates a warm and cozy hat, and works up faster than the medium (4) weight alternative. With a hole on the top, you can fit your messy bun or ponytail through so there’s no choosing between wearing a hat or having your hair up! As someone who ALWAYS has their hair in a bun, I love wearing these in the chilly weather!

This pattern is beginner friendly and easily adaptable to make it the perfect size for you! The instructions include 4 sizes: Child 3-10 yrs, Teen/Adult Small, Adult Medium, & Adult Large.

INSPIRATION

As someone who wears their hair in a messy bun 95% of the time, I love bun beanies! I designed an Easy Breezy Bun Beanie that uses medium 4 weight yarn, but wanted a slightly thicker and warmer version for those extra cold days! The Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie is the bun/ponytail version of my Easy Breezy Chunky Beanie! I absolutely love wearing beanies to keep my head warm in the colder months, so this gives me the best of both worlds!

EASY BREEZY COLLECTION

At this moment the Easy Breezy Collection consists of 6 patterns! There are 5 beanie patterns: the Easy Breezy Ribbed BeanieEasy Breezy Chunky BeanieEasy Breezy Super Chunky BeanieEasy Breezy Bun Beanie, and the Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie. Then there is one scarf/cowl pattern, the Easy Breezy Scarf.

There are two bun beanies, the Easy Breezy Bun Beanie and the Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie, which have holes on the top so you can fit your ponytail or bun through! They’re the perfect beanie for anyone who wants to keep their head warm but their hair up! There are 3 regular beanies the Easy Breezy Ribbed BeanieEasy Breezy Chunky BeanieEasy Breezy Super Chunky Beanie. Each of these beanies use a different weight of yarn so you can make a beanie no matter what yarn is in your stash or what thickness of beanie you want!

Is there any other patterns you’d like me to add to the Easy Breezy Collection? Let me know what else you’d like to see! I love making these simple yet beautiful patterns and would love to add onto the collection!

Yarn

You will need a bulky (5) weight yarn for this pattern. I used Lion Brand Yarn Color Made Easy which is now unfortunately discontinued. But there a many other yarns I think would work great! You could also use 2 strands of medium (4) weight yarn held together too if you wanted!

Yarn substitutions you could use are: Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me, which is a bit thicker than Color Made Easy was, so you may need to adjust the amount of stitched and rows you work. Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek Chunky, I Love This Chunky!, Big Twist Gentle, and Big Twist Classic.

SIZES

The Easy Breezy Chunky Bun Beanie pattern includes instructions for 4 sizes: child, teen/adult small, adult medium, and adult large. You can adjust the pattern to be any size you’d like though! Work as many starting chains to get the length you want for your beanie and work as many rows as you need. See the size chart below for the measurements to each size.

Sizes (In inches)Head CircumferenceHat CircumferenceHat Height (total length)Hat Height (w/ folded brim)
 Child (3-10 Years)19”-20”17”8.5”6.5”
Teen/ Adult Small21”18”9”7”
Adult Medium22”19”10”8”
Adult Large23”20.5”10.5”8.5”

Notes

  • Instructions are for the smallest size first, followed by the next sizes up in parenthesis.
  • The pattern is written to create a brim approximately 2” tall. To adjust the height of the beanie and the height of the brim, simply make your initial chain longer or shorter.
  • The pattern is written to create a hat circumference approximately 4” smaller than the head circumference to make up for stretching. If you would like to make the hat circumference smaller or larger, simply add or subtract rows. Be sure you always end on a Row 4 (the opposite end of the bun hole).
  • The CH 1 at the beginning of each row and the SC around the loop, do not count as a stitches throughout the whole pattern. Work the first HDC of the row into the last HDC from the previous row.
  • The number in parenthesis at the end of each row represents the total number of stitches to be worked in each row. The smallest size will be first, followed by the next sizes up. The SC around the center does not count as a ST.

  • Hello! Loved the idea of this beanie but I think I did something wrong….my beanie does not come out with straight stitches like yours but instead has the rows going diagonal so instead of |||||| it looks more like //////
Any idea what it is that I could’ve done wrong?

    • Hi Alexandria! I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with the pattern! I am not sure why your stitches are slanted, could be because of your tension, or just the natural way crochet stitches work when we work in rows. I’m sure once the beanie is all done it will look just fine though! I’m sorry I can’t be more help!
